ABSTRACT

The present study has addressed the resistance tests of bare ONR Tumblehome (ONRT) model 5613 which has 1/48.9 scale ratio, by using both experimental and computational methods. Experimental studies of ONRT hull have been carried out at the Ata Nutku Ship Model Testing Laboratory of Istanbul Technical University (ITU) according to the procedures and guidelines recommended by International Towing Tank Conference (ITTC). Computational resistance analyses of benchmark ONRT model have been done using a RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes) method. Uncertainty analysis has been applied to both numerical and experimental methods to get information about the accuracy and reliability of the results. In order to verify and validate (V&V) the numerical model, experimental data are used. Since the experimental results are assumed to be actual results in V&V studies, the differences between the experimental and numerical results are termed “error”. However, without data on the uncertainty of experimental studies, it is not correct to say that this difference is an error. Consistency of the computational and experimental results has been investigated and discussed by means of estimated uncertainty values.
