ABSTRACT

Despite the fact that unsafe working conditions for journalists is a growing concern on a global level, there is a dearth of research into self-censorship among journalists, where journalists for safety reasons choose to avoid certain topics, angles, and perspectives in their reporting. This chapter discusses and defines the concept of self-censorship in relation to the safety of journalists, conceptualizing self-censorship as the avoidance of topics, angles or perspectives that may be in the public interest, due to perceived physical or psychological risks that publishing could entail-including online and offline harassment, physical violence and threats. Furthermore, the chapter highlights current challenges related to the safety of journalists and self-censorship, and raises questions concerning where to look for solutions to self-censorship among journalists.
