ABSTRACT

The evolution of technology has provided a new momentum to teleworking, which mainly takes place in the home. According to Global Workplace Analytics Research (2017), approximately half of the US workforce holds a job that is compatible with at least partial telework. The purpose of this chapter is to address the following question: Working from home: Is technology a help or a hindrance in achieving work/life balance? The home has different actors and entails juggling of roles and responsibilities. Technology has two sides. On the one hand, there is the “always-on” work culture being connected 24/7 where working from home augments work done for the employer. However, technology can enhance work/life harmony if appropriate boundaries are set. Teleworking 2–3 days weekly seems to be the optimum time that allows for a balance of concentrative work (home) and collaborative work (office). Employers that facilitate working from home can recruit and retain the best employees. The home plays a very crucial role in society from the perspective of a healthy home life being essential for a healthy work life and a healthy society. Technology, if managed well, can accelerate the latter benefits.
