ABSTRACT

In “The Hundred Year Life,” Andrew Scott and Lynda Gratton urge all of us to think ahead; they suggest we should imagine a conversation with our older self, our avatar aged 90+. No doubt that older self will rebuke us for failing to put enough into our pension scheme, and for failing to take enough exercise and choose a better diet! But will our avatar also ask why – when we were fit and able – we did not find the home that would suit us for our later years? Will we regret that we did nothing to “rightsize” while we had the energy and good sense to sort out our comfort and care in older age? This chapter considers the importance of the home for our later years. It discusses the inability of the market to provide the homes needed for an ageing society, and it proposes key steps to achieving the homes we will need.
