ABSTRACT

Research on body image and disordered eating in the Malaysian context has experienced dramatic growth over the past two decades. In tandem with this growth, scholars have begun to use a range of measures to assess body image and disordered eating in Malaysian samples. This chapter presents a non-systematic review of the use of such scales and highlights a range of measurement concerns. In particular, extant research has paid far too little attention to issues of validity and reliability vis-à-vis the scales they are using. This limits the conclusions that can be drawn on the basis of available datasets and raises concerns about the trajectory of research on body image and disordered eating in the Malaysian context. A series of recommendations for scholars are presented in the conclusion.
