ABSTRACT

In this chapter, psychology and psychological issues in Cambodia will be surveyed. First, background context and historical information will be presented so that readers from diverse regions and nations will understand the current situation. Similarities and differences between neighbouring nations will be briefly described in terms of history, politics, and culture. Special attention will be devoted to the Khmer Rouge era and its aftermath, including its impact on the health-care workforce and the psychological well-being of the population. Data on trauma, PTSD, depression, and indigenous health conditions will be discussed. The current state of psychology as a profession, including numbers and types of mental health professionals and educational programmes, will be described. Current data on the prevalence of various mental health conditions and service provision will be presented. Some discussion of refugee and immigrant health will be included. The chapter will conclude with discussion of the implications for the future of psychology and psychological well-being in Cambodia.
