ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to understand the experiences of women survivors after leaving their abusive relationships. Three women (aged 33, 39, and 45 years old) who had left their marriages within 1 to 4 years in an abusive relationship were interviewed. They shared their experiences through in-depth interviews based on a qualitative research design. The questions included the experiences of being in an abusive relationship, the time frame of being abused, and the types of abuse faced by the survivors before they decided to leave the abusive relationship. The women were also questioned about their life after leaving the abusive relationship. The results revealed three major themes: an appreciation of life, a deeper understanding about abuse, and an increased spiritual relationship with God. The results indicated that survivors would strive to save their relationship; however, upon reaching their ultimatum point, they would change course and decide what is best for their future. Suggestions for professional helpers and future implications are discussed.
