ABSTRACT

This chapter explores impact Higher Education in much the same way as would be the case in corporates or the professions. It looks at various examples of corporate leadership failure from a number of different industry sectors. The chapter aims to summarise the bare bones of the facts with a view only to highlighting issues of leadership and not to suggesting or apportioning blame. It outlines two examples where leadership failures resulted in environmental damage and/or loss of human lives: Exxon Valdez and Deepwater Horizon. The Exxon Valdez was an oil tanker carrying approximately 53 million US gallons of crude oil, bound for Long Beach, California. Deepwater Horizon was a mobile oil-drilling rig owned by Transocean and contracted to BP, with Halliburton contracted for various operations. The chapter discusses two linked examples from the field of energy trading and the audit profession: Enron and Arthur Andersen.
