ABSTRACT

Leadership in the professions, the corporate world, and Higher Education is often seen in terms of the ability to influence peers whilst being respected as technically excellent in one’s own field. Military leadership encompasses a number of characteristics that are mutually understood between officers, non-commissioned officers, and those under their command. The military, too, operates on short-term deployments. Indeed, a normal tour of duty may be only two or three years at the end of which an individual may move to a new role in a new unit, whether at the same or a more senior level. The military has long recognised the power of high-performing teams. The actions and impact of the individual in any given organisation may be lauded or derided depending on one’s point of view. Ultimately, however, the gravity of leadership applies itself and it becomes clear that leadership is about bringing together individuals to act in concert.
