ABSTRACT

For Joanne Bowen, Luke Buchanan-Hodgman, and Lisa Fedoruk, the reality of being a leader in higher education has brought with it countless opportunities to impact upon both the individual and the institution. Collectively, their understanding and appreciation of what being a leader means is broadly shared, with reference to a need for authenticity and to provide purpose and space for others to pursue professional endeavours. Luke, Lisa, and Joanne spoke glowingly about the impact their PhD supervisors had on shaping them as leaders through providing stretch opportunities, championing them as junior leaders, and allowing space to develop and explore their own ideas. Over time, it is inevitable that what makes a leader proud will change as more experiences of leadership begin to accrue. It follows then that the more leadership experiences one has, the more one will wish they had done things differently.
