ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses some of Robert G. Mugabe's sentiments on the gospel of prosperity and the debate it stirred in the print media using the Agenda Setting Theory. The analysis is done through qualitative content analysis of selected newspaper articles on Mugabe and by other writers on the topic in response to his sentiments. A discussion on the agenda setting effect of Mugabe on the gospel of prosperity would entail a basic understanding of the meaning of the term “the prosperity gospel” or “gospel of prosperity.” Contestations over the prosperity gospel have arisen, with critics castigating it as being theoretically bankrupt and being anti-Christian, deficient and heretic, as well as wicked teaching. Many people have been drawn to the prosperity gospel churches due to poverty. The turning of people to these churches is due to the appeal of the prosperity gospel.
