ABSTRACT
This study has a two-fold objective. First, the media landscape of Balochistan is mapped. Second, based on two case studies, it argues that the province is covered by the mainstream media only when it offers tabloidised fare for what can be called “disaster journalism”. Investigating the coverage of the province, this research explores the widely accepted but rarely researched phenomenon of insufficient, shallow, and sometimes biased coverage of Balochistan in the mainstream media with a nationwide outreach. However, the study restricts itself to the coverage in two mainstream Pakistani newspapers of two incidents—a terrorist attack killing members of a minority community and a financial scandal in Balochistan.
