This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides a broad global perspective for understanding the nature and contradictions of neoliberal globalization that has led to its crisis across the globe. It examines in great detail the fundamental contradictions of the post-Soviet transformations that the imposition of the neoliberal policy paradigm has led to the emergence of an oligarchy that expanded its wealth on an unprecedented scale through the imposition of an authoritarian regime. The book addresses the changes in leadership that have been going on in that country since the ascendance to power of Xi Jinping in 2012. It also provides a historical analysis of the rise of authoritarianism and right-wing politics in the United States. The book argues that since Narendra Modi became the prime minister of India in 2014, the politics of hate and revulsion, the culture of violence, and fearmongering have masqueraded as “democracy.”.
