ABSTRACT

Our aim was to identify preferred behaviors associated with methods of maintaining a slim body in members of amateur sports clubs for gender and sexual minorities – physical activity, diet, bariatric surgery, liposuction, weight loss supplements, and weight loss medication – and to analyze the individual and socio-environmental factors shaping these behaviors. First, using snowball sampling we determined the number of amateur sports clubs catering to the needs of sexual minorities in Poland. Then, we used computer-assisted web interviewing. Physical activity is the preferred method for maintaining a slim body. The choice of particular methods may be associated with one’s health, body mass index, and relationship status. In men, preferred sexual roles may also affect the probability of choosing diet as a method for maintaining a slim body. These factors, together with experience with sports, should be taken into account when devising adequate strategies for body weight management and promotion of pro-health behaviors.
