ABSTRACT

The present-day construction of underground structures requires constant geo-monitoring. The amount of monitoring needed is open to debate and, despite professional advice, it is often the case that underground structures are either subjected to unnecessary and costly over-monitoring or, at the opposite end of the spectrum, insufficient monitoring. The cost of geo-monitoring can make up a considerable portion of the overall construction budget, therefore the investor would be well advised, in cooperation with the designer, to approach the issue in a responsible manner and to take full advantage of the professional advice on offer.
