ABSTRACT
This chapter utilizes the closure of HMP Holloway as a way to understand ideas around trauma, art and “borderspace”. It examines the unconscious re-enactments of damaging and distressing relational and familial dynamics. Hans Hack is a Belgian artist whose print series “Prison Typologies” takes the outlines of prisons throughout the world and makes works of art from them. The writing of prose and poetry and the making of art has been used extensively for memorialising lost people or lost spaces, although the questions and concepts these works pose often culminate in silencing or destruction. The feminist art historian Griselda Pollock writes that; “trauma explodes the typical distinctions between fiction and fact”. Bracha Ettinger, the Israeli artist, psychoanalyst and philosopher, talks about the gaps left in collective memory when trauma is not spoken about, when it is covered up and removed.
