ABSTRACT

This chapter suggests that gestures performed on the sam may indeed be influenced by tempo and meter, and may be dependent on the way singers manage and structure their performance: deals with a discussion of the findings and their implications for the development of future research. Gestures performed include mostly those already discussed, and, in particular, hands closing downwards or inwards, one or both hands moving towards the lap, turns of the wrists and arm stretches. The starting tempo of the rupak bandis, on the other hand, corresponds to the sections in the jhumra one in which, once the tempo increases, the quality of gestures performed changes and moves towards an increase of upward movements of the hands.
