ABSTRACT

Just as Mahatma Gandhi had Indians living with him as members of his family, so he had English friends living with him both in Durban and Johannesburg. Not all of those who lived with Gandhi liked it; but he persisted in having them. The most influential of such helpers was Mr. Hosken, who held with distinction the post of President of the Association of Chambers of Commerce of South Africa and was a member of the Legislative Council of the Transvaal. He undertook the onerous task of Chairman of the Committee of European sympathizers with the Satyagraha movement. Another individual who helped in the struggle was Mr. Albert Cartwright, the editor of The Leader. Then there was the Rev. Charles Phillips, who joined and assisted the Gandhi and his followers even as the Rev. J. J. Doke did. Mr. Gabriel Isaac, a freelance Jewish friend, cheerfully shared imprisonment with the movement followers.
