ABSTRACT

This chapter presents special attention to certain members of the imperial family – the children. It focuses on one of the imperial families who had small children, the Antonines in the second century CE. Even though the literal evidence of the marriage and Lucilla’s journey create a gloomy picture of the event, for the city of Ephesus the celebration of an imperial wedding must have been an occasion. The chapter discusses travel in the Roman world from the viewpoint of the interaction between the ruler and the ruled through a special group, the children of the imperial family. During the Antonine era, the children’s presence was essentially used as a complementing factor in the pictures created on the Antonine coinage and other media. The Antonine era is considered a time of relative peace, especially under the reign of Antoninus Pius.
