ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the oil Industry's impact of the ecology and the regions involved and the measures implemented by Petroleos Mexicanos and the state to counteract the problems. By bringing to light these aspects of the problem, one might also determine to what extent environmental issues represent a hindrance to the oil industry's development and how much attention should be given to environmental conservation in future industrial development. The impact of the oil industry on the environment became intense and extensive; the number of accidents occurring at oil installations increased, resulting in human, material, and ecological losses; and there was a considerable increase in oil exploitation. Warnings about the irreversible damage to Mexico's ecosystems as a result of oil expansion came from a number of specialized circles, all of which unanimously agreed on the urgent need for effective plans and programs to protect the environment.
