ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the most important historical and analytic events in the history of nuclear electricity and to show the way in which the industry's planning has evolved. As was the case in many countries, Mexico's interest in developing nuclear electricity arose around the time of the Atoms for Peace Program and the international Conference on the Pacific Uses of Atomic Energy when great expectations were held about the pacific uses of atomic energy. In 1966 Federal Electricity Commission decided to move into the field of nuclear electricity. Pending in the nuclear community is a strategy reconciling the social and political commitments of specialists with the high-level scientific and technical abilities that nuclear development in this country truly needs. The future of nuclear energy in Mexico increasingly depends on the capacity to overcome the political, technical, economic, financial, and institutional difficulties hindering sure access to fuel and nuclear technology.
