ABSTRACT

Commentators increasingly recognize an imminent increase in military use of space, and none seems to seriously deny a current practice among the ever expanding number of space-using nations to make some military uses of space. The practice among nations to make military use of space is both longstanding and extensive. One product of the concern over the prospects for military competition in outer space has been the Soviet Union's proposed Prohibition of Space Weapons Treaty. The position of the current administration is that space arms control is inextricably linked to broader US arms control initiatives, but attempts to ban particular weapon systems or even to ban all weapons from space are not without some support in the US Congress. Generally, military space activities are secret. Nevertheless, some of the general contours of current practice may be glimpsed in unclassified sources.
