ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the development of economic and trade ties between the United States and mainland China; the trend, direction, and characteristics of the technology trade between the two sides. It examines the technology trade between Washington and Peking is presumed to be a one-way transfer of technology from the United States to mainland China. The chapter focuses on the transfer of technology which takes place via the trade in goods and services. When machinery and equipment, information, and so on are transferred from one place to another, technology is also transferred. This transfer of technology can be either commercial or noncommercial. Commercial transfer usually includes: the sale of machinery and equipment or products; design contracts; licensing of patent rights; management contracts; and direct investment by outsiders, including joint ventures. The technologies imported from the United States cover a range of industries including coal, petroleum, chemicals, hydroelectricity, geology, metallurgy, posts and telecommunications, and electronics.
