ABSTRACT

The history of India's foreign and international economic policies since 1947 bears out the fact that the government of India has pursued external policies of significance in many parts of the world. It is crucial to appreciate that India, like Japan, the People's Republic of China, the USSR, the US, and the major West European countries, holds a world view that is global. Others tend to see India as a country that should concentrate its efforts and limited resources on the development of its own economy, building constructive and friendly contacts with immediate neighbors, and working cooperatively with smaller Asian nations toward greater political stability, reduced sources of potential conflict, and increased regional security. Students of India's foreign policy have reviewed the record since 1947 in numerous studies. In addition to military and trade agreements of importance to India, Soviet advisers in a number of fields have been active in economic planning, and explorations for oil and mineral deposits.
