ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book deals with the perceptions held by two actors, the People's Republic of China and Japan, and the perceptions of a collective set of actors known as Southeast Asia. It describes some of the major issues or considerations relating to their Asian policies that must be faced by the policy-makers of each country. In considering these issues, it is important to remember that the Asian environment is clearly different from the European one. The book also describes some of the key issues to be addressed by all Asian nations: Sino-Soviet relations, the problems of interdependence vs. national assertiveness, various economic issues, and the possibility of internal conflict. It reviews how the actors in Asia may perceive their regional environment and how this perception might influence their interactions.
