ABSTRACT

Numerous forces are shaping the growth of the Republic of Armenia’s army. Most importantly, the military reflects the determination of Armenia’s people to establish and defend themselves as a free and democratic nation. Armenians were reminded of what a coalition of Turkic people can do, especially if it results in Pan-Turanism. The most prominent monument in Armenia’s capital faces Turkey and is dedicated to the “martyrs” of the 1915 Genocide. Armenia’s painful experiences have imbued the people with a firm conviction that they must be prepared to defend themselves, the Armenian identity and culture against any and all aggressors. Armenia is experiencing excruciating pains related to its transition from a controlled economy and programmed society to a market economy and a free people. The President of Armenia is also the nation’s commander-in-chief. Armenia seeks military security within a democratic context. While most Armenians advocate a strong defense-oriented military, the average citizen is suspicious of anyone wearing a uniform.
