Many Asian states have long looked to the United States as a prime supporter of their economic and strategic interests and as a leader in Pacific affairs. US leaders have taken greater pains to reassure Asian allies and have managed to establish a better consultative framework in US Asian policy. The administration and Congress reassured Asian friends regarding US trade policies by working well together to avoid protective tariffs or other harsh measures that would close US markets to Asian goods and seriously disrupt the joint economic welfare.
