ABSTRACT

The active components in cannabis, phytocannabinoids, can influence a wide array of biological processes in the human body through the production of endogenous analogs for arachidonoylethanolamine and 2-arachidonoylglycerol. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors like tranylcypromine (Parnate), phenelzine (Nardil), and isocarboxazid (Marplan) have fallen out of favor for treatment of depression due to the reported side effects and interactions with food and other medications. There is a high risk of similar interactions if used with cannabis. More than two-thirds of Americans now live in jurisdictions that have legalized either the medical or adult use of cannabis, and states with legalized medical cannabis have a decreased amount of opioid overdose deaths. Dosage is the key factor in achieving the most benefits from cannabis. Some individuals can use 1mg of full spectrum cannabinoids daily and achieve pain reduction or anxiety relief while others require 1,000 to 1,500mg daily.
