ABSTRACT

Cannabis is one of the oldest known botanical drugs and has a controversial history. Its medicinal value is questioned as legalization is considered. Cannabis has been used for over 500 years in the treatment of pain, inflammation, neuralgia, migraine, and dysmenorrhea, but it was determined to be of “little medical use” and removed from medical formularies. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a major non-psychotropic cannabinoid that is almost as abundant as THC, especially in hemp. The proportion of CBD:THC is selected for in the cannabis plant-breeding program by the grower. The endocannabinoid system plays a critical role in pain and inflammation through a potent anti-inflammatory antioxidant activity superior to Vitamins C and E. Cannabinoids may enhance the analgesic effects of opioids to permit lower doses and analgesics and minimize incidence or severity of side effects.
