ABSTRACT

The rapid expansion of the extractive sector stirs both high hopes for the future and anxieties among Greenlanders. When the subject of extractive industry development was broached, it was talked about as something that takes place outside young Greenlanders’ sphere of involvement. The role of youth as stakeholders is further supported by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, emphasising the right of youth to engage in decision-making processes according to the competences and abilities they hold. The new digital technologies and media, such as social media networks, have revolutionised communication and information conveyance. Facebook as a communicative platform proved effective in engaging young Greenlanders as it served not only as a flexible, familiar and commonly applied medium among youth for receiving and providing information across vast distances between the cities, settlements, and across national borders; it also functioned as a safe forum for engagement.
