ABSTRACT

Martin Gardner’s book Encyclopedia of Impromptu Magic lists tricks from A to Z. However, there are no tricks for five letters of the alphabet. In my photo (see Color Plate VI), there are 21 different items, some single, some multiple, each beginning with a letter of the alphabet for which Martin’s book includes a trick. There are apples for A, bottle tops for B, etc.—you get the idea. Which five letters were left off the list? (The answer is given on the next page.)

The omitted letters are J, Q, U, X, and Y. The represented letters are as follows:

A = apples B = bottle tops C = corks D = dice E = eggs F = fork G = glove H = handkerchief I = ice cubes K = key L = life savers M = matches N = nuts O = olives P = paperclips R = rope S = salt and sugar T = toothpicks V = vest W = watch Z = zipper
