ABSTRACT

Palatogobius Gilbert, 1971 Two species are in this Caribbean genus. Palatogobius paradoxus, known from the Virgin Islands, NE Gulf of Mexico, Panama, and Venezuela, occurs on coral rubble and sand at depths of 23 – 78 m, most at the greater depths (Gilbert, 1971). P. grandoculus is known only from Cozumel, Mexico, where it was trawled from depths of 253 – 275 m (Greenfi eld, 2002). Both species are about 3 cm SL. Th e body has scales from the base of the caudal fi n forward to the pectoral-fi n base, the pelvic fi ns are united but lack a frenum, and most specimens possess vomerine teeth. Th ey are rare in preserved collections, and little is known about their distribution or ecology (Table 2.1.3).
