ABSTRACT

Th e western african coast has one endemic mudskipper, Periophthalmus barbarus (Linnaeus, 1766), which is distributed from Senegal to Angola as well as on the Gulf of Guinea islands (Harrison et al., 2003a, 2007a; Wirtz et al., 2007). Only two species are apparently recorded from the east coast of South Africa as deduced from the key in Jaafar and Larson (2008) and SAIAB database entries (Froese and Pauly, 2009 (SAIAB entries only)): P. kalolo Lesson, 1830 and P. argentilineatus Valencinnes, 1837 (Jaafar and Larson, 2008). P. kalolo is distributed from the western Indian Ocean to Oceania and P. argentilineatus from east Africa to western Pacifi c (Jaafar and Larson, 2008). SAIAB data base entries for Periophthalmus from the region include also P. sobrinus Eggert, 1935, a synonym of P. argentilineatus according to Murdy (1989), and P. koelreuteri (Pallas, 1770), a synonym of P. barbarus (according to Murdy, 1989).
