A study on the perception of haptics in in-cockpit environment
Haptic technology is being used in various areas recently. Especially, the delivery of various information to users with Haptic technology accomplishes many performances. However, Haptic technology in aviation area is being used very restrictedly. Nevertheless it can provide various information for pilots in cockpit to prevent Human Error, it cannot get out from a form of information transmission depended on vision and audition. This way for information transmission is limited to deliver various information to pilots intuitionally and correctly in urgent aviation environment. In this situation, importance of Haptic technology which is a new form of information transmission has increased. This research proposes a method of design guideline development for Haptic technology application considering aviation environment. This study aims to provide practical guideline for designing the haptic interface in cockpit by investigating i) Thresholds of Intensity, ii) Satisfaction Intensity levels, iii) Satisfaction for position, and iv) Satisfaction for Rhythm. Twenty-eight participants took part in the experiments that were conducted at aviation simulation environments, which consisted on real flying, commercial vibration actuators (i.e., the eccentric motors) attached on Anti G-suit and 3D monitor that shows scenes of flying. This study recommended methodology for haptic interface guideline, and showed the characteristics of haptic interface in cockpit.
