ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an indication of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines’s commitment towards their safety programme and shows the various tools being used to enhance safety. KLM has developed a pro-active safety policy aimed at anticipating safety threats. It realises that safety for passengers should be self-evident and not a condition of travel. In 1993 the KLM Flight Safety department introduced the British Airways Safety Information System (BASIS). By implementing BASIS a start was made in registering safety events. Together with NASA and the Dutch National Aerospace Laboratory KLM is now in the process of developing the Automated Performance Monitoring System. This will enable the Flight Safety & Quality Assurance department to closely monitor daily operation on a wide variety of parameters. Audits within KLM are carried out each year, creating a quality environment as improvements are made by the employees themselves.
