ABSTRACT

The measurement of outcome following diaphyseal fractures in the lower limbs takes place on three levels:

• The measurement of long-bone fracture healing per se, which is appropriately covered in this chapter because these are the injuries in which it is most often problematic. This would include the attainment of surgical objectives such as union (as well as the speed with which that is achieved) and the occurrence of complications such as malunion or infection.
