ABSTRACT

The frequency of diagnosis of children with biliary and/or pancreatic lesions is increasing. Whether this is the result of better recognition of disease processes or because of an increasing predisposition of patients to these diseases is unclear. The effect of treatments such as total parenteral nutrition and the ramifications of neonatal resuscitative techniques that have led to smaller and earlier preterm infants surviving have both been suggested as possible reasons for the apparent increased incidence of these diseases. Whatever the cause, there is a growing need for the skilled use of diagnostic and therapeutic pediatric endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).
