ABSTRACT

Malrotation is a common congenital anomaly, occurring in up to 2 percent of the population. The lesion may appear in a newborn with evidence of complete bowel obstruction, or individuals may remain asymptomatic throughout their entire lives. The direst consequence of malrotation is the development of intestinal volvulus, which can result in a life-threatening strangulation of the entire mid-gut. In this instance, failure to identify the etiology of the abdominal catastrophe and to operate immediately can result in severe short bowel syndrome or death.
