ABSTRACT

Enema reduction remains the preferred treatment for intussusception, unless there is evidence of dead bowel or perforation. Laparoscopy provides a minimally invasive surgical option where attempts at enema reduction have failed to reduce the intussusception, or where enema reduction is contraindicated. It can be used also as a diagnostic tool where intussusception may be suspected clinically but ultrasonography and contrast enemas have proved inconclusive – this usually applies to intussusception confined to the small bowel.
