ABSTRACT
Although the term chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is in common usage and is becoming increasingly used, the older term, venous stasis, is predominant. This is a tribute to John Homans of Harvard who introduced the concept that venous stasis was the ultimate cause of venous ulceration.
