ABSTRACT
The first written reference to veins is probably in the Ebers papyrus, written 1550 , which notes certain ‘serpentine windings’ thought to be varicose veins. The oldest known illustration is a votive tablet in Athens dated the fourth century BC, showing the medial side of a massive leg with what appears to be a varicose vein.1
