The critical care management priorities for the severely

injured patient are resuscitation, restoration of physiology,

maintenance of tissue oxygen, continual monitoring, preven-

tion of infection and the provision of organ system support.

In the UK more than 25 000 people are seriously injured each

year; this translates to approximately 2500 trauma patients
