chapter  11
Neurological critical care
ByKeith Girling & Bernard Riley
Pages 20

The last two decades have seen significant changes in the

management of neurological conditions on the critical care

unit. This has been due to the introduction of new therapies,

new modalities of monitoring and imaging of the brain, and

the appreciation that intensive monitoring and strict attention

to detail in the management of this group of patients may

have significant effects on the outcome of neurological

conditions. This chapter will review the current management

strategies for patients with traumatic brain injury, cerebrovas-

cular disease and intracranial haemorrhage, and common

neurological emergencies.
