ABSTRACT
The lung has an extensive and sophisticated defence system that ensures that the lower airways remain sterile. In COPD bacteria often colonize the airways and may be associated with inflammation or the development of acute exacerbations. The mechanisms involved and the implications of the bacterial/host interactions are largely unknown. The current chapter outlines these interactions and explores the implications for patients with COPD.
