ABSTRACT
The Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and the World Health Organization estimated that there would be 39.1 million people infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) by the end of 2004. Approximately 96 per cent of people with HIV/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) live in the developing world with 64.5 per cent of them in sub-Saharan Africa.1
