ABSTRACT

The preceding chapter discussed the role of the occupational physician in the management of sickness absence. One of the most important aspects of the work of the occupational physician is the assessment of the functional capacity of employees and potential employees both before employment and on return to work after a significant illness. Following significant illness the functional assessment and assessment of the workplace will lead on to goal setting for the employee and liaison with and advice to management on an appropriate programme of rehabilitation to attain those goals. Successful rehabilitation into the workplace is likely to increase self-esteem and confidence as well as the monetary benefit. Employers should not discriminate against

disabled people where this treatment cannot be justified. This applies to all aspects of employment and includes recruitment as well as during employment.
