ABSTRACT

There has been a significant increase in the use of ultrasound in anesthesia, critical

care, and pain management in recent years. Within the United Kingdom, this has been

driven, in part, by the publication of guidelines from the National Institute for Health and

Clinical Excellence (1) on the use of ultrasound in the placement of central venous

catheters (CVCs). Many departments have already purchased equipment in order to

comply with these guidelines. However, there remains no clear strategy for training and

accreditation.
