ABSTRACT

The purpose of this paper is to present some results from a concept analysis of classification. Classification in this respect is understood as the process of defining the key concepts in an application domain, as well as the vocabulary that results from the process. The analysis emphasizes the importance of membership conditions to define classes and identify class members, and suggests that classification is a prerequisite to the data modeling process. It is assumed that the vocabulary will be of valuable help to designers engaged in the design of conceptual data models, and to end-users and internal auditors when interpreting and validating conceptual data models.
