ABSTRACT

There is a large variety of maps for everyday use. Well-known examples are: city maps, public transport maps, road maps, maps in travel guides, recreational maps and maps in directories. Most people are likely to associate the word ‘map’ with atlases and topographic maps, impressive panoramic maps, or very specialist maps such as those of the ocean floor. Here, however, the main theme will be the maps people use for activities in their daily lives. An example of this kind of map is the one shown in Plate 17.1 showing a map for tourists in Amsterdam.
