Evaluation of the wayfinding system at Stansted Airport

ByNirmal Kishnani

A post-occupancy evaluation is significant as a culmination point in the design process, partly because behaviour can rarely be sufficiently foreseen on the drawing board-especially behaviour that is a response to the interaction between space, signs and other information in different media, in multiple-user settings such as airports. Partly also, wayfinding is affected by factors beyond the designer’s control, such as daily routines and operational imperatives. The influence of these factors becomes evident only after the building has attained a certain capacity of usage.
